When a minor or micronutrient is lacking, or locked up by soil chemistry there are a typical symptoms that your crops will show. A word of caution! Yield is the obvious and most immediate effect a shortage of a mineral will have on your crops. In addition to this other effects can contribute not just to your crops performance but your business balance sheet too. Without adequate levels of available minor and micronutrients, your crops will not be able to process the bulk nutrients you have invested in. If you apply 220kg of Nitrogen to your winter wheat you can expect a good yield for that investment. But what happens if your soils only contribute enough Manganese and Magnesium to utilise 180kg of Nitrogen?

The 40kg difference will volatilise or leach depending on its form. This is effectively money down the field drain. In essence there is a loss to your business through not planning your minor or micronutrient needs as part of your bulk nutrition strategy. Crop quality is impacted by a lack of mineral availability too, such as low protein levels and bushel weights due to sulphur shortages during grain filling. All this and an increased fungicide bill?

When crops can’t process nitrogen efficiently they are more susceptible to disease. Fungicides are a critical part of modern agronomy, though refining your nutrition strategy and helping your crop use its bulk nutrition (or fuel) more efficiently will reduce its vulnerability to diseases.
